It’s that time of year again—the weather is warming up, the days are getting longer, and the flowers are blooming. With spring right around the corner, and as you get ready for barbecues and beach trips, don’t forget to add electrical maintenance to your spring checklist. We’ve prepared this list of key items for your spring electrical maintenance checklist to make things easier for you.
While it may seem like a no-brainer, you’d be surprised how many homes still don’t have working smoke detectors! Smoke alarms protect your home and family in case of an emergency, and they’re only effective if they work properly. To test a smoke detector, press the button and listen for a beeping sound. If the alarm doesn’t make any noise, replace the battery immediately. If you can’t get it to work after replacing the battery, it’s time to purchase a new smoke detector. It’s also a good idea to clean the sensors if they look dirty.
Your electrical panel is the heart of your home’s electrical system. It’s important to ensure that all the switches are in the “off” position and check that you flip on each circuit breaker. If you see any breakers that are off, flip them back on and test the corresponding outlet or light switch to make sure it works again. If you suspect a problem with your electrical panel, you’ll want to call an electrician right away. Don’t attempt any repairs on your own—they can be dangerous and may lead to serious injury!
Look at your electrical outlets carefully. You may notice that some of them are darker than others or have burn marks around the faceplate screws. This could indicate overheating, leading to a fire if you don’t address the issue promptly. If you see any signs of overheating, make sure that you have this serviced by a qualified electrician.
During the inspection, an electrical contractor can also tell you if your electrical outlets are properly grounded. If they’re not, this could be another potential fire hazard. At this point, they can also recommend the best way to ground your outlets.
It’s also a good idea to look at your wiring. Make sure there are no frayed or loose connections, as these can cause serious problems, like an electrical fire. Rodent damage and water exposure are additional signs to watch out for when checking your wiring.
