3 Ways EV Drivers Can Save Money Charging at Home

August 30, 2023

Many drivers of electric vehicles have a similar routine when it comes to charging their cars. You could just plug your car in as soon as you get home, which helps form the habit and ensures your vehicle can run when you need it to. However, here are three ways that EV drivers can save money charging at home and develop habits that are better for their vehicles and their monthly utility bills.

1. Charge During Non-Peak Hours

An unfortunate reality with many electric companies is that they don’t always charge households at the same rate. Depending on where you live and the time of year, “peak” hours are often in effect. Peak hours are the windows of time when the cost of your electricity rises because other households are using more power. For example, since more people use their air conditioners during the hot summer days, you can save money by plugging your car in after 9 p.m. when many turn their ACs off, or at least down, using less power.

2. Utilize Solar Energy

Solar panels are slowly becoming more affordable and a good choice for homeowners who want to invest in sustainable energy. You can save money charging your vehicle and feel good knowing that your EV is running on an even more sustainable system by connecting your solar system to your electric vehicle charger.

3. Avoid Full Charges

Unless you regularly run through a fully-charged battery daily, you probably don’t need to charge your vehicle all the way. EV drivers can save money charging at home by putting a cap on their charger systems. Instead of charging all the way to 100%, you can set your system to turn off when the battery reaches 80% capacity. The last 20% of a battery usually takes the longest to charge and uses the most energy, but you can accomplish most of your daily tasks without draining your vehicle.
